St. Margaret Mary’s habit: surrendering ourselves to Jesus

On August 25th, 1671, when St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was 24 years old, she was clothed in the habit of the Order of Visitation. The habit is a sign of consecration to God that not only serves to identify a consecrated person, but the habit conveys the message of consecration to those around us. But what about lay people who do not wear a habit? How do they convey their consecration to God? In our baptism we are all consecrated to God carrying the light of Christ into the world; we bring truth and love to others as Christ taught us. St. Margaret Mary looked with great excitement on the day of being clothed in the Visitation habit. A sign that she was now consecrated, and she was to “doubly” love him. For Margaret Mary the day of her investiture meant that Jesus “had acquired a new right” over her. How far are we willing to go in surrendering ourselves to Jesus? We may not wear a habit, but is our heart surrendered to Jesus?

Jesus, teach me surrender my heart to you.
